History Education (Secondary)
The teaching major in American History shall consist of the following courses plus the Teacher Education Requirements for the secondary license:
HIST 105 American Government 3 hrs.
HIST 125 U.S. History Survey, 1607-1877 3 hrs.
HIST 126 U.S. History Survey, 1877-present 3 hrs.
HIST 300 History Research and Methods* 3 hrs.
Elective courses in History† 18 hrs. Total 30 hrs.
* Teaching majors in social science should enroll in HIST 300 before taking any other upper-division course.
† 200-or 300-level courses only. 15 hrs. must be in American History. Electives may not include required support courses, divisional courses, or courses used for another major or minor.
Students pursuing the teaching major in social science shall also meet all Institutional Support Course Requirements as well as those of the Department of History and the Division of Human Studies except where otherwise specified.
Iowa Teaching Endorsements may also be earned and added to the above license in the area of psychology.
The advanced courses required to complete these teaching licenses and endorsements are not offered annually or every semester; students must take this into account when planning courses of study
