What is Privilege?

Privilege is a sort of discrimination that divides people by their "labels" based on essentially who they are.  Every person has a "label" that describes what type of life they live, how they physically look, what sexuality they are, certain beliefs they have, and what culture they come from.  Privileges and certain rights and freedoms are given to the most dominant groups in certain cultures whether we notice it or not.  The dominant groups change depending on where you are in the world.
In the United States, privilege is often granted to people who have membership in one or more of these social identity groups whether it is conscious or unconscious:
  • White people;
  • Able-bodied people;
  • Heterosexuals;
  • Males;
  • Christians;
  • Middle or owning class people;
  • Middle-aged people;
  • English-speaking people
