Music Ensembles

Choral Ensembles

The IWC Concert Choir consists of approximately 40 singers and performs frequently each semester. In addition to concert performances, the ensemble sings for multiple special ceremonies on campus and at least twice each semester for worship services at local churches. The Concert Choir takes a domestic tour each academic year and has traveled to Europe twice in the past decade.

Iowa Wesleyan College Broad Street ConnectionBroad Street Connection is a vocal ensemble of 10-12 singers specializing in the performance of chamber, classical and popular music, as well as vocal jazz. The group performs regularly in concerts and for special events on and off campus.

Mount Pleasant Chorale consists of students and adult community members. The ensemble performs at least once each semester. Concert programs often include choral- orchestral masterworks.

Vocal ensembles are directed by Dr. Bradley Miller.

Instrumental Ensembles

Southeast Iowa Symphony OrchestraThe Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, directed by Maestro Robert McConnell, is a regional professional symphony orchestra of about 50 musicians, including Iowa Wesleyan students, faculty members and community members. The ensemble performs classical orchestral literature offering three subscription series concerts yearly (each performed in Mt. Pleasant, Burlington and Ottumwa, Iowa) and several educational and entertainment programs including the Fourth of July “Symphony Blast,” pops concerts, Young Artist competition, school tours and concerts featuring nationally- known musical artists.

The Southeast Iowa Band is a semi-professional community band of about 50 students, faculty and community members. The group performs a formal concert each semester of classic band literature. This group is supported financially through donations from concert patrons and Iowa Wesleyan College. Robert McConnell is the director.

The IWC Chamber Band is an ensemble of about 30 student musicians that performs traditional band literature. This group typically presents one formal concert each semester and performs for ceremonial events including the spring commencement. Dr. David Johnson is the director.

The IWC Big Band is a traditional 15-piece jazz ensemble of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section instruments that performs traditional big-band jazz. This group also serves as the core ensemble for the athletic pep band, performing occasionally for football, volleyball and basketball games. A Jazz Combo also is offered and allows students to work on the art of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic jazz improvisation through standard jazz classics. Dr. David Johnson is the director.

The IWC Drumline and Percussion Ensemble consists of 10 percussionists, snare, tenor and bass drums, cymbals and mallet keyboard instruments and performs at athletic events (fall and winter months). The percussion ensemble rehearses and performs in concert settings during the spring semester. Dr. David Johnson is the director.

Chamber Ensembles, in addition to the groups listed above, include smaller ensembles such as Woodwind Ensembles, directed by Dr. Jason Edwards.
