BETTENDORF – Iowa Wesleyan College freshman Kennedy Kiprop (Iten, Kenya) won the individual title in the men’s race as the Tiger cross country teams competed at the St. Ambrose University Invitational at Crow Creek Park Saturday.
Kiprop finished the eight-kilometer race in 27:18, topping a field of 47 runners and finishing 15 seconds ahead of John Darmody of St. Ambrose for the individual championship. It was Kiprop’s first collegiate win at a meet and came two weeks after he finished behind Darmody at the William Penn University Invitational in Oskaloosa.
IWC did not field a complete men’s team, with four runners competing on Saturday. Finishing closest behind Kiprop was Kyle Neff (Fr.-New London, Iowa), who placed 42nd with a time of 33:57. C.J. Earnest (Fr.-Wapello, Iowa) was 46th with a time of 39:33, while Aaron Gatlin (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) was 47th with a mark of 41:03.
Illinois Institute of Technology won the men’s team title with 21 total points. IIT placed five runners in the top seven to easily outdistance St. Ambrose (42 points) for the title.
Wesleyan had one competitor in the women’s race, as Kate Krzystofiak (Jr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) was 59th of 65 runners with a time of 27:43. Illinois Tech also won the team and individual titles in the women's competition.
The Tigers now get ready for the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships to be held Nov. 7 at the Lacey Sports Complex in Oskaloosa. Kiprop and Darmody will be among the individual favorites in the men’s race.
