IWC volleyball wins Monmouth triangular, clinches first winning season since 2005

MONMOUTH, ILL. – Megan McVey (So.-Fort Worth, Tex.) had 40 kills over two matches and the Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team finished 2-0 at the Monmouth College Triangular Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers opened the day with a four-set win over Principia (Ill.) College (20-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-15) and then defeated the host Fighting Scots in five sets (25-27, 25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14) to cap the tourney.

With the two wins the Tigers improved to 16-11 overall this year and clinched a winning record for the first time since 2005. IWC has two regular season matches remaining, plus the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament in November.

Wesleyan got off to a slow start against Principia, losing the first set before breezing through the final three sets. McVey had 17 kills, Katie Jammer (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) added 12 kills and Kendra Zimmerman (Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 41 assists in the match against the NCAA Division III Panthers.

The competition was tougher in the second match, as IWC lost the long opening set to Monmouth. Wesleyan rebounded to win the next two sets but was pushed to a fifth set before pulling through at the end.

McVey followed up her big first match with a career-high 23 kills against the host Scots. Jammer added 10 kills and a team-leading 26 digs, while Zimmerman had 48 assists and Allegra Tennis (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) was responsible for seven blocks.

IWC will wrap up the regular season with a pair of home matches against Midwest Collegiate Conference opponents. The Tigers’ next opponent will be Viterbo (Wis.) University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Ruble Arena.
