CEDAR RAPIDS – Mount Mercy College scored a pair of goals in the first half and Iowa Wesleyan College saw its season end with a 2-0 loss to the Mustangs in the first round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament.
The eighth-seeded Mustangs avenged a regular season loss to the #9 seed Tigers, winning despite a 15-8 advantage in shots for IWC. Wesleyan saw a once promising season come to a frustrating end, finishing the year with a 7-10-2 record.
Mount Mercy scored first in the 28th minute when Kandice Kiernan scored with an assist from Mackenzie Skay. The Mustangs added their second goal eight minutes later with Beth Samek scoring unassisted.
The Tigers were outplayed in the first half as MMC posted a 7-4 advantage in shots. Wesleyan came back in the second half and outshot the Mustangs 10-1, including an 8-1 bulge in shots on goal, but Katie Manning made 10 saves in the match for the shutout for Mount Mercy.
Jillian Sulcer (So.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) had eight shots in the game (six on goal) to lead the Tigers. Fanny Koloko-Green (Jr.-Fremont, Calif.) and Deandra Franzisi (Sr.-Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) added three shots each.
Mount Mercy avenged a 4-2 loss to the Tigers in the regular season on Sept. 26 in Mount Pleasant. Wednesday’s match was the final one for five Iowa Wesleyan seniors, including Franzisi, Georgetta Lewis (St. Johns, Antigua), Jennie Mitchell (LaGrange, Ga.), Britni Walker (Loveland, Colo.) and Karly York (Waukee, Iowa).
Mount Mercy advances to a quarterfinal match against top-seeded St. Ambrose University on Saturday in Davenport.
