Dr. Harold C. "Hal" Huffman '35
Mt. Pleasant native Dr. H.C. Huffman graduated from Iowa Wesleyan in 1935 with a degree in chemistry. He participated in football, basketball, and track while a student. Huffman was a member of Sigma Phi Epilson and Blue Key.
The halfback, known by his football teammates as "Horsie", earned an All-Conference and 3rd Team All-State accolades. He lettered in all three sports and served as Letterclub President. He participated in the Drake Relays in 1933 and earned first place in the 880-meter run.
Author Buck Turnball stated in his book. The Iowa Conference Story, Forty Years of Intercollegiate Sports 1921-1961, "If one were to pick a single (track) meet for star billing in the 40-year run, 1933 would be a good choice. Almost 30 years later conference athletes are still trying to lower three records set in that meet. Hal Huffman, an Iowa Wesleyan sophomore, won the 100-yard dash in 9.7 seconds and the 220 in :21.5. Both remain unequaled."
Huffman earned a doctorate in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 1940. His career in the petroleum industry culminated as one of the top executives for Union Oil Company (Unocal). He was executive vice president in the research division and was repsonsible for generating over 45 patents for the company.
Huffman passed away in 1996 at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, of Irvine, CA.
Dustin P. Dewald '91 Dustin Dewald graduated from Iowa Wesleyan in 1991 after three outstanding seasons as a quarterback. Dewald was recruited fromTarleton State University, Texas, by then IWC head coach Hal Mumme, and was a starter three years for the Tigers, finishing with a record of 24-11.
Examining the football record book, one will see Dewald's name throughout. Dustin holds every quarterback record at Iowa Wesleyan, and one record for all NAIA and NCAA divisions - the most pass completions in a game. Dustin had 61 completions out of 86 attmepts on September 21, 1991, against Harding University, Ark.
Dewald is ranked fifth among all NAIA and NCAA divisions in career passing with 12,045 yards. He finished his career at Iowa Wesleyan with 1,064 completions, 1,671 attempts, 12,045 yards and 115 touchdowns.
Between 1989 and 1991, he set 25 NAIA records, and was named to NAIA Preseason, Second Team, Honorable Mention, and Academic All-American rosters.
Dustin is the president and owner of DPD, Inc., a custom hone building company. He is married to Tiffany '91 and they have two boys: Drew, 11, and D.J., 6. They reside in Dustin's hometown of Copperas Cove, Texas.
