Freshman Shields paces Tiger track teams in opening meet of indoor season

GALESBURG, ILL. – Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.) clocked one of the top times in school history in the 55-meter dash as the Iowa Wesleyan College track and field teams opened their indoor season at the Knox College Pentangular on Saturday.

Competing in his first meet for the Tigers, Shields won the finals of the dash with a time of 6.58 seconds. His time ranks third all-time on the Wesleyan indoor track performance list and helped the Tigers finish with 36 points, fourth of five teams competing.

IWC posted a total of seven top-five finishes at the meet, including five by the men’s team. Shields had two top-five placements, adding a fifth in the 200 with his time of 23.99.

Freshman Ridge Hobbs (New London, Iowa) was third in the long jump with a mark of 6.21 meters, while Jason Amy (Sr.-Lake Elsinore, Calif.) was a few steps behind Shields in the 55 dash, finishing fourth in 6.85. The 4 x 200 relay team of Amy, Hobbs, Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) and Shields also took second with a time of 1:35.58.

The Wesleyan women’s team finished fifth with a total of 13 points. IWC was led by Caitlyn Jones (So.-Cornell, Ill.), who in her first meet was second in the 400 with a time of 1:06.22. She also placed seventh in the 200 with a time of 29.98.

Also scoring points for the Tigers were Mariah Montgomery (Fr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.) in the 55 hurdles. Montgomery was fourth in the event’s finals with a time of 9.72, while Reyna was two spots back in sixth with a mark of 10.42. Melanie Brambila (Fr.-Berwyn, Ill.) added another top-10 finish, placing eighth with a mark of 8.45m in the long jump.

The IWC track teams will be back in action Saturday at the Illinois College Snow Bird Open in Bloomington, Ill. Events will begin at 11 a.m.
