MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College guard Anna Jones (So.-Cornell, Ill.) has been named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Monday.
Jones received the award for the first time in her IWC career after leading the Tigers to a pair of wins last week. She stepped up her scoring in wins over nationally ranked Grand View University and Viterbo (Wis.) University, as the Tigers won both of their games last week despite being hit by several injuries.
Jones averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, five assists and four steals last week while shooting 51.9% from the field in the two wins. She scored 19 points and had five assists in a 71-57 win over a Grand View team ranked #21 in the NAIA Division II coaches’ poll last week. She also had 16 points, five assists and seven steals on Saturday in a 64-50 win over Viterbo.
The 5-7 sophomore point guard led the Tigers in scoring in both games after Jessi Beachey (Jr.-Fisher, Ill.), the leading scorer in the MCC, missed both games due to a nagging knee injury. IWC also was without top reserve Lindsee Bachicha (Jr.-Brighton, Colo.) against Grand View. Wesleyan has now won 12 of its last 13 to improve to 13-7 overall, and at 6-1 in the MCC the Tigers are one-half game ahead of St. Ambrose University in the conference standings.
For the season Jones is averaging 9.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 2.8 steals per game, leading the Tigers and ranking second in the MCC in both assists and steals. She also is leading the team averaging 32.4 minutes per game and joins teammate Sheray Brown (Jr.-Detroit, Mich.) as the only two players to start all 20 games for Wesleyan this season.
IWC next takes the court on Saturday when it travels to Forest City to face Waldorf College at 1 p.m.
