JACKSONVILLE, ILL. – Richard Silva (Fr.-Kirkland, Wash.) finished second in the shot put to lead the Iowa Wesleyan College indoor track and field teams at the Illinois College Snow Bird Open on Saturday.
Silva finished with a best throw of 14.22 meters, scoring half of the points scored by the Tiger men. IWC finished 11th of 16 men’s teams competing, scoring 16 points as a team.
Silva actually finished with a shorter best than he did a week ago at the Knox College Pentangular but improved his finish in his second collegiate meet. His finish came among a field of 43 competitors.
Wesleyan scored its other eight points in the 55-meter dash where it posted two of the top six finishers. Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.) placed fourth in the finals with a time of 6.54 seconds. He improved on his time of a week ago, resetting the third-best time in IWC indoor history. Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) joined Shields in the finals and finished sixth with a time of 6.65.
The IWC women finished 13 of 15 teams with a total of four points. Those points came from freshman Mariah Montgomery (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), who placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.83. The Tigers’ best finish as a team came in the 4 x 200 relay, where Wesleyan was third of four teams with a time of 1:58.97.
Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.) and Melanie Brambila (Fr.-Berwyn, Ill.) both joined Montgomery in the 55 hurdles finals, finishing ninth and tenth, respectively, with times of 10.79 and 11.30. Caitlyn Jones (So.-Cornell, Ill.) added a finish of 13th in the 200 with a time of 29.39.
The Wesleyan track teams will be in competition again on Saturday with the Titan Open hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill. Events will start at 10 a.m.
