MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College has marked Saturday’s home Midwest Collegiate Conference basketball games against Ashford University to participate in the Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness initiative to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
Donations will be accepted before and during Saturday’s men’s and women’s basketball games against the Saints. Donations will go to Coaches vs. Cancer, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) that encourages basketball coaches, teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
IWC men’s players will go through the stands at halftime of the women’s game to take donations, with the Tiger women returning the favor at the half of the men’s game. Following Coaches vs. Cancer tradition, IWC Head Coaches Steve Williamson and Alan Magnani and their staff will also wear sneakers during the games. The sneakers have become a signature gesture of Coaches vs. Cancer games, a show of support to generate exposure and create visibility for the organization’s cause. All of those attending the games are also invited to wear sneakers in support of Coaches vs. Cancer.
Coaches vs. Cancer has designated this weekend, Jan. 29-31, as its national Suits and Sneakers weekend. In addition, the Midwest Collegiate Conference also has marked Jan. 30-Feb. 6 to recognize the cause, and all MCC schools will participate in the event. In the past Iowa Wesleyan has raised more than $2,000 for Coaches vs. Cancer.
Saturday’s doubleheader will start with the 15th-ranked IWC women facing Ashford at 1 p.m. The Wesleyan men’s game against the Saints will follow at 3 p.m.
