Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009 and 2010. In 2011 we were one of few colleges in the US to be named to the Honor Roll with distinction. This selection to the Honor Roll is recognition from the highest levels of the federal government of the college’s commitment to service and civic engagement on campus and in the nation.
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. The Honor Roll is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is sponsored by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
Colleges and universities are selected based on a number of criteria, including the scope, innovativeness and evidence of effectiveness of the service projects, and the percentage of total student enrollment engaged in community service activities.
The Iowa Wesleyan College Center for Service Learning and Civic Engagement provides all students the opportunity to explore their values and ideals for social action with a context of directed and course-based learning. The service learning program at Iowa Wesleyan was begun in 1968 and is one of the oldest civic engagement programs in the country. 100% of our student body engages in service activity during their tenure on campus. Since the program’s inception our students have given nearly 1.25 million hours of service to our local, regional, and global communities.
