MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College senior guard Jared Callanan (Bennington, Vt.) has been named an Honorable Mention All-Midwest Collegiate Conference selection for the 2009-10 season, the MCC announced on Wednesday.
Callanan was the lone Tiger to receive conference honors after IWC finished the season with a 9-20 record, placing ninth in the conference in the regular season. Wesleyan finished its season losing in the quarterfinals of the MCC Tournament.
Callanan averaged 12.8 points per game this season and was one of the leading three-point shooters in the MCC and in the country. The senior averaged 3.4 three-point field goals per game, tops in the MCC and fifth nationally in NAIA Division II. He finished with 96 threes made on the season, best in the conference and sixth nationally, and was second in the MCC in three-point percentage (40.9%).
Callanan finished his career with a flourish, starting the Tigers’ final six games and averaging 22 points per game while making 5.7 3-pt FG/game and shooting 45.3% from beyond the arc during that time. He set a career high with 36 points in IWC’s MCC tourney first round win over Clarke College, setting a new school single-game record with nine three-pointers made in that game. He finished his career with 155 three-point field goals over two seasons, tying Jesse Hill (2004-07) for ninth on the school’s all-time list.
A transfer from Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass., Callanan finished his two-year career at IWC with 567 career points and averaged 9.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. He shot 40.3% from three-point range and was an 82.1% free throw shooter.
Viterbo (Wis.) University forward Scott Buschman was named MCC Player of the Year. St. Ambrose University guard Justin Tiner was voted Newcomer of the Year, while Paul Gavin of Mount Mercy College was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year.
