KANSAS CITY, MO. – The awards for the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s basketball team continue to come in as junior Jessi Beachey (Fisher, Ill.) was named a First Team NAIA Division II All-American on Tuesday.
Beachey is the first IWC player to get first team All-American honors since Linda Froman in 1989. She is Iowa Wesleyan’s 20th different All-American in school history, seventh since the school was competing exclusively against four-year colleges, and she is the fourth different player to receive national honors under Head Coach Steve Williamson.
A junior college transfer this year from Parkland CC in Champaign, Ill., Beachey finished the season averaging 17.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, shooting 58.1% from the field and 77.5% from the free throw line. The 6-2 forward led the Midwest Collegiate Conference in scoring and was second in field goal percentage and also ranked 19th nationally in scoring and sixth nationally in FG%, and was named MCC Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
Beachey led the Tigers to a 27-8 record this season and a trip to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II National Tournament. IWC set school records this season for wins and most wins in a row (16), and its two wins and Elite 8 appearance in the national tourney was the furthest advancement in the NAIA tournament in school history. The Tigers finished their season Saturday with an 89-72 loss to Northwestern (Iowa) College in the quarterfinals to the team that eventually won the national championship.
