MOUNT PLEASANT – Several big hits last week resulted in Pedro Hernandez (Sr.-Quebradillas, Puerto Rico) winning the Midwest Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Week award, which was announced Monday by the conference.
Hernandez received the conference honor after a pair of game-winning hits last week led the Tigers to two home wins. He won the award for the first time in his career and is the first IWC baseball player to win the award this year.
The senior catcher/first baseman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning on March 16 in the second game of a doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) College, giving the Tigers a 6-5 win in extra innings. Two nights later Hernandez again came up with the game-winning hit, smacking a bases-loaded two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Wesleyan a come-from-behind 8-7 win over Clarke College.
For the week Hernandez finished hitting .316 over five games with six hits and three runs scored. He finished with two home runs and six RBIs, and also hit a solo homer in the opening game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Hannibal-LaGrange.
In IWC’s first 22 games, Hernandez is hitting .333 and leads the team with four home runs. He also has scored six runs and has 10 runs batted in.
