ROCK ISLAND, ILL. – Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) posted a pair of top-three finishes in sprinting events, including a win in the 100 meters, as the Iowa Wesleyan College track & field teams began their outdoor season at the Viking Olympics hosted by Augustana College.
Talton won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.89 seconds, edging out teammate Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.) for first. He also was third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.40, and both of his times were good for third place on IWC’s all-time outdoor list in their respective events.
Shields finished the 100 meters in 10.99 seconds, a time good for fourth on IWC’s all-time outdoor list. He also scored for the Tigers by finishing ninth in the 200 with a time of 22.96. Shields and Talton also were part of the Tigers’ 4 x 100 relay team that finished fourth with a time of 43.06.
Iowa Wesleyan’s men finished with 42 points, good for sixth place in the team standings. Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa) added a third-place finish in the long jump with a best mark of 21-6 ¾, while Richard Silva (Fr.-Kirkland, Wash.) was seventh in the discus with a top throw of 141-0.
The Tiger women’s team was led by Mariah Montgomery (Fr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.) finishing 12th and 14th, respectively, in the 100 hurdles. Montgomery finished in 1.65, while Reyna came home in 18.43. B.J. Wagy (Jr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) also added a top-15 finish, taking 13th in the javelin throw with a best of 91-3.
Other finishers for IWC included Kati Krzystofiak (Jr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) placing 16th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:50.82. Hannah Zaiser (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) also was 21st in the 100 meters with a time of 14.15.
