KANSAS CITY, MO. – Adding to awards received earlier in the week, Iowa Wesleyan College junior Jansel Encarnacion (Jr.-Azua, Dominican Republic) has been named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national baseball Pitcher of the Week, the NAIA announced on Tuesday.
Encarnacion was dominant last week for IWC in winning a pair of games and throwing 14 1/3 scoreless innings. He pitched 5 1/3 innings against St. Ambrose, allowing three hits while striking out six in a 5-0 win over the Bees. He then threw a complete game shutout on Sunday against Mount Mercy, allowing eight hits over nine innings while striking out 11 in a 6-0 win. For his performances Encarnacion was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Encarnacion joined Brandon Young of Vanguard (Calif.) University as the third national honorees by the NAIA this season. Young was named the national player of the week for his play at the plate. The pair was chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week selections among 20 NAIA conferences and independents.
Encarnacion currently has a 3-2 record on the season and a 4.93 earned run average. He has allowed 37 hits in 34 2/3 innings and has given up 19 earned runs while striking out 36 and walking 11. His performances last week helped IWC to improve to 14-15 overall this season and move to 6-2 in MCC play.
