MOUNT VERNON – Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) set a new Iowa Wesleyan College school record in the 100-meter dash and the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s track & field team finished third at the Cornell College Invitational on Saturday.
Talton ran the 100 meters in 10.73 seconds in the preliminaries, blowing away the mark of 10.80 seconds originally set by Robert Day in 1987 and equaled in 1994 by Rodger Bowers. He also improved his NAIA ‘B’ qualifying standard time and just missed hitting the national ‘A’ qualifying mark of 10.70 seconds, which would guarantee automatic qualification to the NAIA National Outdoor Championships May 27-29 in Marion, Ind.
Talton would go on to win the 100 meter finals in 10.84 and was one of three Tigers to finish in the top six in the event. Levor Henry (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) was second in 11.17 while Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa) was sixth with a time of 11.61.
IWC’s men finished with 69 points, good for third of seven teams competing at the meet. Cornell won the title with 118 points and was followed by Grinnell College with 90 points.
Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.) added another title for Wesleyan in the 400 meters, finishing in 50.51 for the fifth-best mark on IWC’s all-time outdoor list. Hobbs also won the long jump easily with a best of 21 feet, 6 inches, and the 4 x 100 relay team was first as well with a time of 43.36. The Tigers’ 4 x 400 relay team also added a second place finish with a time of 3:32.91, and Richard Silva (Fr.-Kirkland, Wash.) was third in the shot put with a top throw of 48-6 3/4.
The Iowa Wesleyan women’s track team finished seventh of seven teams competing with a total of 21 points. The team’s top finish came in the 4 x 100 relay with a third-place finish in 53.37. The Tigers’ top individual event was the 100 hurdles, where Mariah Montgomery (Fr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) was fourth in 17.00 and Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.) took seventh in 18.77.
Other high individual finishes came from B.J. Wagy (Jr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Danielle Des Jardins (Fr.-Peoria, Ill.). Wagy was fifth in the javelin with a best throw of 77-8 1/4, while Des Jardins was fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.27. Des Jardins also placed eighth in the 400 (1:03.46) and Erin Karlsgodt (Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) was ninth in the shot put with a mark of 32-0 1/4.
IWC will next compete in the Dick Young Classic hosted by Grinnell College next Saturday. Events begin at 9 a.m.
