GRINNELL – Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) won a pair of individual events and also was a member of a winning relay team and the Iowa Wesleyan College sprinters were red-hot again at the Dick Young Classic hosted by Grinnell College on Saturday.
The Tiger men’s track & field team won three sprinting events in finishing seventh of 16 teams with 51 points. Wesleyan also hit several NAIA Outdoor National Championships provisional marks and placed three of the top seven in the 100-meter dash, including a 1-2 sweep at the top.
Talton won the 100 meters in 10.76 seconds, his second-fastest time of the season and just off his school record of 10.73 set last week. He also was victorious in the 200 meters with a time of 22.05, and for good measure joined Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.), Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa) and Levor Henry (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) in winning the 4 x 100 relay with a time of 42.42, a mark good for second all-time on IWC’s all-time records list. The 4 x 100 relay time also met the NAIA ‘B’ qualifying standard for the national championships.
Shields was second in the 10 meters, finishing behind Talton with a time of 10.86. He also competed in the 400 meter dash and finished third with a time of 50.13, a time good for fifth on IWC’s all-time outdoor list in the 400. Henry also joined Talton and Shields in the 100 meter finals, placing seventh with a time of 11.35.
In between competing in several sprinting events, Hobbs also managed to finish seventh in the long jump with a best jump of 21 feet, 8 inches (6.60 meters). Richard Silva (Fr.-Kirkland, Wash.) also was a finals qualifier for IWC in the shot put and placed seventh with a best throw of 47-6 1/2 (14.49m).
The Tiger women’s track team also had solid sprinting performances in finishing 15th of 16 teams competing at the meet. Danielle Des Jardins (Fr.-Peoria, Ill.) was fifth in the 200 dash with a time of 27.21 and also placed seventh in the 400 in 1:01.98.
Des Jardins also joined Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.), Hannah Zaiser (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) and Melanie McCreight (Jr.-Winfield, Iowa) in winning a heat in the 4 x 100 relay, finishing seventh overall with a time of 52.83. McCreight had the Wesleyan women’s best finish in a field event, placing eighth in the high jump with a best jump of 4-9.
Next on IWC’s schedule is the Drake Relays next week in Des Moines. Several Tiger men and women will be competing at the Relays on Friday at Drake University.
