Tiger relay teams compete at Drake Relays

DES MOINES – Several members of the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s and women’s track and field teams received a great experience when they competed against some strong competition at the famed Drake Relays on Friday.

Four teams of IWC sprinters participated in relay races at the Relays in the College Division, consisting of NAIA schools as well as members of NCAA Divisions II and III. Though none of the Tiger teams advanced to the finals, they competed in front of large crowds and against some of the premier small college teams in the country at the meet hosted by Drake University which is annually one of the biggest collegiate meets in the country.

The Wesleyan men’s track team competed in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relay events. The 4 x 100 relay team of Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.), Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa), Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) and Levor Henry (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) was sixth in its heat and finished 16th of 30 teams competing with a time of 42.90. Shields, Hobbs and Talton also were joined by Jason Amy (Sr.-Lake Elsinore, Calif.) in the 4 x 200, finishing in 1:29.84, a time good for third in their heat and 17th overall of 29 teams in the division.

The IWC women’s track team also competed in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays. Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.), Hannah Zaiser (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa), Danielle Des Jardins (Fr.-Peoria, Ill.) and Melanie McCreight (Jr.-Winfield, Iowa) finished eighth in their heat and 33rd overall with a time of 53.28 in the 4 x 100. Later in the day, the same four runners also participated in the 4 x 200, finishing in 1:51.34, good for sixth in their heat and 24th overall in the College Division.
