Iowa Wesleyan College Associate Professor of Education, Dr. Ginny Maurer, was named 2010 Chadwick Teacher of the Year during the annual Awards Day ceremony April 29. Brian Carter was named Part-Time Instructor of the Year.
Maurer is chair of the Division of Education. She has been a member of the Iowa Wesleyan College faculty since 2005. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Iowa State University. She completed her Ph.D. at Texas A & M University. She serves as an adjunct instructor for Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted Education in Iowa City. She has co-authored several books for early elementary grades in math and creative thinking skills.
Maurer was cited for her “high standards, contributions to the college and community and her devotion to student learning and success.” Student award nomination s described her as passionate, dedicated and exceptional. One student wrote that Maurer is an excellent role model because of her “high-quality instruction, respect for students, availability to answer questions and provide help, personable attitude, and, most of all, her compassion for teaching.”
According to Dr. Nancy Erickson, vice president for academic affairs, Maurer has been instrumental in improving the quality of the teacher education program. “Dr. Maurer successfully led the division through an Iowa Department of Education Program review, as well as the creation and implementation of a comprehensive assessment system for teacher education candidates and the program,” she said.
The Chadwick Teacher of the Year Award has been presented annually at Iowa Wesleyan College since 1971. This honor was named for Dr. J. Raymond Chadwick, who served as president of Iowa Wesleyan College from 1950 to 1961.
Carter, of Mt. Pleasant, has been a part-time evening instructor for Iowa Wesleyan since 1985. He has taught American government and U.S. history courses for the Extended Learning program through the years, most recently teaching sections of global issues courses for both day and evening students. He earned his undergraduate degree in history/political science from the University of Iowa and his master’s degree in political science from Western Illinois University.
The Part-time Instructor of the Year Award has been presented annually at the College since 1997. This honor recognizes outstanding teaching through the Iowa Wesleyan College Extended Learning program.
