DUBUQUE – Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) again set a new school record in the 100-meter dash, leading the Iowa Wesleyan College track & field teams this weekend at the University of Dubuque Outdoor Open.
Talton ran the 100 meters in 10.65 seconds, breaking his school record by .08 while finishing second in the event on Saturday. The time automatically qualifies Talton for the NAIA National Outdoor Championships at the end of the month in Marion, Ind., meeting the NAIA ‘A’ qualifying standard. He will be the first IWC athlete to compete at the outdoor national championships since Floyd Turner finished a run of four straight national titles in the discus in 2007.
Talton finished just behind Davivorn Dowe of Dubuque in both the 100 and 200 meters, also finishing second in the 200 in 22.49. He also picked up the win in the 400 meters with a time of 50.15, defeating the rest of the field by more than a second.
Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa) also picked up an individual win in the long jump with an outdoor season-best of 21 feet, 11 3/4 inches. The freshman tied Chris Talley (1995) for the fourth-best outdoor mark of all-time at IWC.
Tim Chavez (Jr.-Champaign, Ill.) also had three top-8 finishes for Wesleyan in throwing events. Chavez was sixth in the shot put (38-11), seventh in the hammer throw (94-11) and eighth in the discus (100-8).
B.J. Wagy (Jr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led the Tiger women’s team at Dubuque with a third place finish in the javelin, with a best throw of 89-4. Katie Streeby (So.-Eldon, Iowa) also was eighth in the javelin (62-4), while Erin Karlsgodt (Sr.-Brainerd, Minn.) was eighth in the shot put (28-0 3/4).
Danielle Des Jardins (Fr.-Peoria, Ill.) and Hannah Zaiser (Jr.-Burlington, Iowa) led IWC in sprinting events. Des Jardins was seventh in the 200 (28.28) and eighth in the 400 (1:02.69), while Zaiser was seventh in the 100 meters, advancing to the finals and finishing in 13.59.
Several members of the IWC track and field teams also competed this weekend at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Multi-Event Championships in Des Moines. The women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon championships were contested at Williams Stadium in Des Moines, with Rachel Luehrs of St. Ambrose winning the heptathlon and Matt Smalley of Grand View taking the decathlon.
Melanie McCreight (Jr.-Winfield, Iowa) posted a strong finish in the women’s heptathlon, finishing fifth with 3,548 points. Serina Reyna (So.-Selma, Calif.) also was 16th in the heptathlon with 2,470 points. Jason Amy (Sr.-Lake Elsinore, Calif.) was the lone Tiger in the men’s decathlon and finished ninth with 4,415 points.
The Tigers now get ready for the MCC Championships this week, to be held Thursday and Friday in Des Moines with events starting Thursday afternoon.
