McCreight posts two more top-five finishes on first day of MCC Championships

DES MOINES – Melanie McCreight (Jr.-Winfield, Iowa) placed in the top five in a pair of events, leading the Iowa Wesleyan College track & field teams on the first of two days of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Outdoor Championships at Williams Stadium.

McCreight continued her good performances in the MCC Championships, placing third in 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.55 in her first time competing in the event this season. She also was fourth in the high jump, topping out at 4 feet, 11 inches, and qualified for the Friday’s finals in the 100 hurdles as well with a time of 17.09 in preliminaries on Thursday.

Counting her fifth-place finish in the heptathlon last weekend in the MCC Multi-Event Championships, McCreight is responsible for all 15 of IWC’s points after the first day of the team championships. St. Ambrose University leads the women’s standings after Day 1 with 93 points, with Mount Mercy College second with 71 and Grand View University third with 67 1/2 points.

The Wesleyan men’s team scored just five points on the first day of competition but is in position for more on Friday with many of the sprinting finals to still be contested. Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa) scored points for the Tigers by taking fourth in the long jump. Hobbs jumped 22-8 1/2 in preliminaries to briefly set a new meet record, and his mark ranks second on the IWC all-time list in the long jump.

Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) qualified for the finals in both the 100 and 200, easily posting the top time of 10.82 in the 100 preliminaries. He also was second-best in the 200 qualifications with a time of 21.94, his best of the season and good enough to meet the ‘B’ qualifying standard for the NAIA National Championships.

Talton was joined by Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.) and Levor Henry (Jr.-St. Johns, Antigua) as qualifiers for the 100-meter finals. Shields also qualified for the 200 finals, as his time of 22.33 on Thursday was the fifth-best in preliminaries. Friday’s events also will include the 400 meters as well as the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.

St. Ambrose leads the men’s standings after one day with 107 points, just ahead of Grand View (99). Ashford University is third with 46 points, with William Penn University fourth with 31 points.
