Iowa Wesleyan College students turned trash into cleaning drinking water through a service project this spring.
Members of the Global Issues class, taught by IWC faculty members Deb Gordon and Nancy Stevens, collected redeemable cans and bottles from sites around campus. The money collected from the redemption was donated to Hays Pure Water for All Foundation.
Founded in 2008, Hays Pure Water for All Foundation helps people in developing countries improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources. The Foundation provides pristine drinking water from its patent pending chlorine generator and a ceramic filter.
Through the donations of cans from the winter and spring athletic events, residence halls, faculty, the Student Nurses Association and those picked up from roadsides, along with monetary donations, the class gave $749.10. This money will be used for water units to be placed in Southeast Asia this summer.
Mr. Todd Baldridge accepted the donation on behalf of the Foundation. Baldridge then spoke to the class about the foundation and his personal experiences delivering the units.
