MARION, IND. – Nigel Talton (Fr.-Fort Valley, Ga.) advanced to the semifinals in the 100 meters and the Iowa Wesleyan College 4 x 100 relay team posted its best time of the season on the opening day of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University.
Talton set another school record in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 10.54 seconds to place 13th of 28 competitors on Thursday. He is one of 18 runners to advance to the semifinals, and his time once again shattered his own school record, bettering his previous fastest time of 10.73 earlier in the season.
Talton also came close to setting a new school record in the preliminaries of the 200 meters, finishing in 21.66 to place 25th of 38 sprinters on Thursday. Though Talton didn’t qualify for the semifinals, his mark puts him second on IWC’s all-time outdoor list in the event, just behind the school record of 21.60 set by Robert Day in 1988.
Wesleyan’s 4 x 100 relay team also improved on the No. 2 mark on the school’s all-time list in its event, recording a time of 42.06. Jason Amy (Sr.-Lake Elsinore, Calif.), Ridge Hobbs (Fr.-New London, Iowa), Xavier Shields (Fr.-St. Albans, N.Y.) and Talton finished 21st of 30 teams on Thursday and crept closer to the school’s all-time record in the relay. The school mark of 41.78 was set back in 1978 by Norm Albritton, Thad Rowe, Greg Cunningham and Bernard Eaves.
Talton will compete in the 100 meter semifinals Friday afternoon. The event is scheduled to be contested at 2:50 p.m. Complete results from the NAIA National Championships are available at http://www.cfpitiming.com/liveresults/index.htm.
