MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College track & field sprinter Nigel Talton (Fort Valley, Ga.) will be competing in the Junior National Championships in the 100 meters as part of the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week in Des Moines.
Talton will run in the 100 on Thursday, with preliminary heats beginning at 12:30 p.m. and the finals at 2:30 p.m. The Junior Nationals are part of the USA national championships, which will be contested June 23-27 at Drake Stadium on the campus of Drake University.
The Junior Nationals is open to Americans age 19 and under who have met qualifying standards for respective events. Contestants in the 100 meters must have run a time of 10.65 or better to qualify. Talton met the standard on May 1 at the University of Dubuque Open when he ran the 100 in a personal best and IWC school record 10.65.
Talton recently completed his freshman year at Wesleyan, where he already has become one of the most accomplished sprinters in school history. He won the Midwest Collegiate Conference outdoor championship in the 100 and qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in both the 100 and 200 meters, including a 14th place finish in the 100.
An estimated 1,800 athletes are expected to be competing at the national championships, including more than 90 Olympians. Live broadcasts of events from the championships will be available to watch online on the USA Track & Field Web site at www.usatf.org.
