MOUNT PLEASANT – A number of former Iowa Wesleyan College baseball players are playing professional or collegiate league baseball this summer in affiliated or independent leagues around the country.
Former Tigers Andre Alvarado and Andrew Barbaro are both members of professional teams. Alvarado and Barbaro are both playing for the Normal (Ill.) CornBelters of the Frontier League.
Alvarado and Barbaro both played at Wesleyan in 2006 and 2007 and now both play for the CornBelters, who play in the independent Frontier League. Barbaro, a catcher, has played in 34 games and is batting .214 with 21 hits, seven doubles and seven RBIs in 98 at bats. Alvarado, a shortstop, has played in 13 games and is hitting .292 with 14 hits, four doubles and five RBIs.
Two recent IWC players, including a current Tiger, are also playing in collegiate wooden bat leagues this summer. Edder Morales (Sr.-Barquisimeto, Venezuela), the 2010 Midwest Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, is playing for the Fort Collins (Colo.) Foxes of the Mountain Collegiate Baseball League, while Jay Olson (So.-Agency, Iowa) is playing for the Alfred (N.Y.) Thunder of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
Olson, who will be a junior in 2010-11 at IWC, was recently named to the NYCBL Western Division All-Star Team. Olson has played in all 25 of his team’s games and is hitting .263 with 26 hits, three doubles and nine RBIs as well as nine stolen bases.
Morales, who completed his eligibility this past season, is hitting .281 with the Foxes with 16 hits in 57 at bats as well as four doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs. He is in his second season with Fort Collins and played with the team in 2009 as well.
