FINDLAY, OHIO – Iowa Wesleyan College has been picked to finish seventh in the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League this season, according to the 2010 preseason coaches’ poll released by the MSFA on Monday.
The Tigers received 13 points in the poll of league coaches, putting them just ahead of Waldorf College (11 points). IWC has finished seventh in the MSFA Midwest League the past two years, including a 1-6 league mark last year (2-9 overall).
Defending league champion McKendree (Ill.) University was picked to again win, emerging from a close vote among the top five teams. McKendree received five first-place votes and 55 points overall in the poll, edging out St. Ambrose University and Grand View University, both which finished with 50 points and one first-place vote each.
William Penn University was fourth with 41 points, while Quincy (Ill.) University picked up the other first-place vote and was fifth overall with 38 points. The University of St. Francis (Ill.) is just ahead of Wesleyan in the poll in sixth with 30 points.
The NAIA also released its national top 25 preseason coaches’ poll on Monday, and two MSFA Midwest teams are ranked to start the season. McKendree will open the season ranked eighth and Grand View is ranked 20th, while St. Ambrose just missed the top 25 and appeared in the receiving votes section.
IWC and new Head Coach Kent Anderson will open the 2010 season at Trinity International (Ill.) University on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. The Tigers then will play their home opener Sept. 4 against Coe College at 5 p.m. at Evans Field at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex. Wesleyan opens MSFA Midwest play Sept. 18 at McKendree.
