DAVENPORT – The Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team picked up a pair of four-set wins in splitting four matches at the season-opening St. Ambrose University Fighting Bee Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Tigers defeated Benedictine University at Springfield (Ill.) to open the tourney on Friday and then added a win over Trinity International (Ill.) University Saturday morning. IWC also lost to Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University on Friday night, and finished the tourney with a loss to Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Wesleyan defeated Benedictine 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 and had three players finish in double figures in kills. Megan McVey (Jr.-Fort Worth, Texas) led the way with 15 kills, while B.J. Wagy (Sr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) posted 13 kills and Allegra Tennis (Sr.-Madison, Wis.) added 11.
The Tigers were in control in their other win, easily taking the first two sets on the way to a 25-20, 25-18, 15-25, 25-20 win over Trinity International. McVey finished with 18 kills in 36 attack attempts with just one hitting error.
Kendra Zimmerman (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) was named to the all-tournament team. Zimmerman finished with 122 assists and also added 29 digs and a team-high six service aces.
McVey led the team with 48 kills in the tourney, while Wagy added 35 kills. Katie Jammer (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 55 kills and Tennis had 11 blocks. The tourney marked the debut of Head Coach Jill Blake, who took over the Iowa Wesleyan volleyball coaching job in the spring.
The Tigers hit the road again over Labor Day weekend for the USF Empire Bowl Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D. IWC opens play on Friday at 2 p.m. against the host University of Sioux Falls.
