SCHERERVILLE, IND. – Jillian Sulcer (Jr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) scored the winning goal in the final minutes and the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the year with a 1-0 victory over Mountain State (W.Va.) University on Sunday in the Calumet College Crimson Wave Classic.
Sulcer scored twice on the weekend and the Tigers won Sunday’s consolation game to finish 1-1 in the Crimson Wave Classic. IWC improved to 1-3 on the season and also scored its first-ever win under first-year Head Coach Sara Williamson.
The Tigers won on Sunday in dramatic fashion as Sulcer scored unassisted in the 84th minute to give Wesleyan the lead. Mountain State would not muster another shot in the final six minutes and Cara Arnold (Jr.-Stillman Valley, Ill.) picked up the shutout and her first win of the season in goal.
The match was mostly even throughout as Mountain State held a slim 12-11 in shots. IWC did hold an 8-6 edge in shots on goal, and Arnold made five saves in goal. Mountain State, a member of the NAIA Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, dropped to 0-3 on the season.
The Tigers played in Sunday’s consolation match after losing their opening match on Saturday to Marygrove (Mich.) College by a 2-1 score. The Mustangs scored in the 23rd and 65th minutes and held on after a late surge by IWC.
Nicole Polite and Ashley Inglsbee scored unassisted goals for Marygrove. Sulcer got one back for the Tigers with seven minutes left in the match, scoring with an assist from Gabrielle Marcelino (So.-Washington, Iowa).
Marygrove, an NAIA independent, finished with a 10-2 advantage in shots and a 6-1 lead in shots on goal. Arnold made four saves in goal for the Tigers. Marygrove would go on Sunday and defeat Calumet 2-0 to win the women’s tournament championship. Sulcer and midfielder Serina Reyna (Jr.-Selma, Calif.) both were named to the all-tournament team.
Iowa Wesleyan returns to the field Wednesday as both the Tiger women’s and men’s teams travel to Fulton, Mo., to face William Woods University. The women’s match against the Owls will start at 5 p.m., with the men’s match to follow at 7 p.m.
