SCHERERVILLE, IND. – The Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team came up empty this weekend, losing a pair of matches at the Calumet College Crimson Wave Classic.
The Tigers lost to Notre Dame (Ohio) College on Saturday by a 6-0 score, and then lost to Marygrove (Mich.) College 2-0 in the consolation match on Sunday. IWC dropped to 1-2 on the season.
In the opener against Notre Dame College, the Tigers were in the game at halftime but gave up five goals in the second half. The Falcons scored three goals in the first 7:22 of the second half to open the floodgates after dominating play in the first half.
Wesleyan was able to stay close for the first 45 minutes despite Notre Dame owning an 11-1 advantage in shots. Troy Osborne (Jr.-Sydney, Australia) made three saves in the first half, but the Falcons scored on five of ten second half shots to win going away.
In Sunday’s consolation match the Tigers gave up a pair of goals to Marygrove in the first 26 minutes and never recovered. The Mustangs scored at the 15:36 mark and again at 25:59 and the Tigers were able to put just three shots on goal in the match.
Osborne made six saves in goal as Marygrove posted a 12-6 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Levor Henry (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) led IWC’s attack with two of the team’s six shots.
Notre Dame defeated Calumet 3-0 in Sunday’s championship match. IWC midfielder Rheyan Sharpe (Fr.-Douglas, Isle of Man) and defenseman Cody Nathan (Jr.-Newark, Calif.) both were named to the all-tournament team.
Iowa Wesleyan returns to the field Wednesday as both the Tiger men’s and women’s teams travel to Fulton, Mo., to face William Woods University. The men’s match against the Owls is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be immediately following the women’s match starting at 5 p.m.
