Tigers stretch foes but lose two at Cardinal Stritch Quad

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Iowa Wesleyan College had a lead in both matches but was unable to pull through a victory in either of its matches Friday evening at the Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University Quadrangular Friday night at CSU’s Wolves Fieldhouse.

The Tigers lost to Illinois Institute of Technology in their opening match in four sets and then lost to Wisconsin Lutheran College in five sets. IWC dropped to 3-9 overall on the season.

Wesleyan won the opening set against Illinois Tech, 25-18, before losing the last three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-20. The Tigers lost to IIT (7-4 overall) for the second time this season, this time posting a .031 attack percentage with 31 kills but 27 errors. Megan McVey (Jr.-Fort Worth, Texas) led the team with eight kills against Illinois Tech.

IWC then came back and lost to Wisconsin Lutheran, 25-17, 24-26, 22-25, 25-21, 15-9. The Tigers fell behind big in the first set but came back to win the next two sets. The Warriors (5-3 overall) won the final two sets, though, and took the match in part due to a big advantage in hitting percentage. WLC had 60 kills to 21 errors in 149 attacks (.262), while Iowa Wesleyan had 44 kills but 33 errors in 155 attacks (.071).

B.J. Wagy (Sr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had 16 kills against Wisconsin Lutheran and led the team with 23 kills over the two matches. Elizabeth Guzman (Jr.-Fontana, Calif.) added eight kills against WLC, while Katie Jammer (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 20 digs. Kendra Zimmerman (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) also had 33 assists in the second match and a total of 56 assists on the day.

Illinois Tech was the only team to finish 2-0 in the quadrangular, while Cardinal Stritch and Wisconsin Lutheran both posted 1-1 records.

IWC returns to Midwest Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday when it travels to La Crosse, Wis., to face Viterbo University at 7 p.m.
