Cheeley scores as IWC ties Illinois College, 1-1

MOUNT PLEASANT – Iowa Wesleyan College scored first but Illinois College came back to tie in the second half and eventually salvaged a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in women’s soccer action at East Lake Park.

The Tigers outshot the Lady Blues 15-11 but put just five shots on goal in moving to 1-5-1 on the season and in non-conference play. Illinois College posted a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal and is now 0-3-1 this year.

Jessica Ryan-Cheeley (Sr.-Burlington, Iowa) scored the Tigers’ goal with an assist from Serina Reyna (Jr.-Selma, Calif.) in the 20th minute. Cheeley’s second goal of the season would stand for a half as IWC led 1-0 at halftime.

The Lady Blues answered with their first and only goal in the 59th minute as Lindsey Koch scored with an assist from Shaina Conwell. The Tigers would have several chances in the second half, as Brittney Moss (Jr.-Genoa, Ill.) took seven of Wesleyan’s 15 shots and was near the goal on a number of occasions. The teams would finish tied through regulation, though, and were still tied after two 10-minute overtime sessions.

Cara Arnold (Jr.-Stillman Valley, Ill.) made eight saves in goal for the Tigers. Courtney Mersinger made four saves for Illinois College, including just one in the final 65 minutes as IC posted a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal in the second half and overtime.

IWC travels to Canton, Mo., to face Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
