Tigers fall to strong Viterbo team in three sets

LA CROSSE, WIS. – The Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball team faced a tough task on the road Wednesday night and lost at Viterbo (Wis.) University 25-17, 25-16, 25-21, in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.

The Tigers dropped to 0-2 in conference play after facing another of the best teams in the conference, this time losing to the V-Hawks after falling in four sets to Grand View University in conference play last week. IWC is now 3-10 overall, while Viterbo improved to 14-3 on the season, 2-0 in the MCC.

Wesleyan scrapped and was competitive with the V-Hawks throughout the match. The Tigers had an attack percentage of just .064, though, including .000 marks in the first two games, while Viterbo posted a .295 hitting percentage with 41 kills to just 15 errors.

IWC trailed by just four points late in both of the first two sets, but Viterbo finished the first set on a 7-3 run and the second on a 7-2 spurt to take control of the match.

The Tigers recovered from a seven-point deficit in the third game to make a late run, trimming the V-Hawks’ 18-11 lead to 22-20. Viterbo scored the next two points, though, and then forced a side out after a Wesleyan serve to win.

B.J. Wagy (Sr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) led IWC with 10 kills, while Marissa Bozik (Fr.-St. Peters, Mo.) added six kills. Kendra Zimmerman (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) had 21assists.

Iowa Wesleyan will be home on Friday for its own IWC Tiger Classic quadrangular. The four-team tourney will start at 4:30 p.m. with IWC facing Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College on Court 1 and Clarke University taking on Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) University on Court 2. At approximately 6:30 p.m., Wesleyan will then square off against Cardinal Stritch on Court 1 while Clarke and Culver-Stockton will play on Court 2.
