Petersen leads IWC women’s golf team in season opener

WAVERLY, IOWA – The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s golf team opened its season this weekend, competing at the Wartburg Fall Invitational at Centennial Oaks Golf Course.

IWC finished 17th of 19 teams competing in the tourney, posting a two-day score of 831. The Tigers opened with a score of 417 on the first day and improved slightly on the second day to 414. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the team title with a score of 648, beating out nearest challenger Washington University (Mo.) by 13 strokes.

Wesleyan was led by Melissa Petersen (Sr.-Wilton, Iowa) who was as consistent as can be. Petersen shot matching rounds of 95, tying for 54th place individually.

Kayla Bishop (Jr.-Monmouth, Ill.) was next for IWC, opening with a round of 104 before improving significantly to finish with a 95 and tie for 71st individually.

Also competing for Wesleyan were Gabby Combs (Sr.-Macomb, Ill.), Alyssa McClain (Jr.-Belleville, Ill.), Michelle Lox (Jr.-Danville, Iowa) and Stevie Schrier (Jr.-Columbus Junction, Iowa). Combs finished with rounds of 108 and 111 for a total score of 219, McClain shot 110-113=223, Lox finished 120-122=242 and Schrier shot rounds of 120 and 141 (261).

The Tigers now get ready for their own IWC Invitational to be held Friday in Muscatine at the Muscatine Municipal Golf Course. Wesleyan also will compete in the St. Ambrose Invitational to be held Saturday and Sunday in the Quad Cities.
