Osborne, Matthews help Tigers play to tie against St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT – Troy Osborne (Jr.-Sydney, Australia) made 13 saves in goal and the Iowa Wesleyan College men’s soccer team battled for a 1-1 tie against St. Ambrose University in both teams’ Midwest Collegiate Conference openers.

The Tigers were outshot 26-11 in the game but got a second half goal from Chris Matthews (So.-Toronto, Ontario) to get the tie in a game in which the Fighting Bees controlled possession. IWC moved to 2-4-1 overall, while SAU is 2-4-2 overall on the season.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half as St. Ambrose outshot Wesleyan 10-4 but Osborne made saves on all six shots on goal to maintain the tie. The Bees took the lead shortly after the halftime break, though, as Kendrick Tyson scored four minutes into the half for the first goal.

The Tigers got the answer in the 63rd minute as Matthews scored unassisted to tie it at 1-1. The score remained that way through regulation and two ten-minute overtime periods despite St. Ambrose applying heavy pressure in the overtime periods. SAU outshot IWC 8-1 in the overtimes but Osborne made three more saves to save the tie for Wesleyan.

Matthews led the Tigers with three shots, while Albert Michael (Fr.-St. Johns, Antigua) and Levor Henry (Sr.-St. Johns, Antigua) both took two shots.

The Iowa Wesleyan non-conference men’s and women’s soccer matches at Principia (Ill.) College scheduled for Tuesday have been cancelled. The Tiger soccer teams’ next matches will be Saturday when IWC hosts Morningside College for non-conference games at East Lake Park.
