Morningside edges IWC women at end of second overtime

MOUNT PLEASANT – Breanna Turner scored with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime period and Morningside College came from behind to sting the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team 2-1 Saturday afternoon at rainy East Lake Park.

The Mustangs scored both of their goals in the second half and overtime periods, coming back after IWC initially led and sending Wesleyan to 1-8-1 on the season. Morningside improved to 2-4-1 with the win in the non-conference match.

The Tigers scored first when Jillian Sulcer (Jr.-Mechanicsburg, Ill.) scored her third goal of the season with an assist from Serina Reyna (Jr.-Selma, Calif.). The goal came in the opening minute of the second half and stood for more than 20 minutes until the Mustangs answered with an unassisted goal by Taylor Hatting in the 68th minute.

It looked as if Wesleyan was going to get out of the match with a tie, but Morningside scored the winner when Turner got free and scored with just over a minute remaining, sending IWC to its third straight loss.

Morningside outshot the Tigers 23-13, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Cara Arnold (Jr.-Davis Junction, Ill.) made six saves in goal for IWC. The match was played in a steady rain as cool and damp fall weather reached the Mount Pleasant area.

Iowa Wesleyan returns to Midwest Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday when it travels to Dubuque to face Clarke University. Game time for the women’s match is 3 p.m.
