MOUNT PLEASANT – Cameron Meter scored a goal with less than two minutes left in overtime and Morningside College capped a tough day for the Iowa Wesleyan College soccer teams by defeating the Tiger men 2-1 Saturday afternoon at East Lake Park.
The Mustangs tied the match with just over a minute left in regulation, and then scored in overtime to give Morningside a pair of overtime wins on the day over IWC soccer teams. The Mustang women also defeated the Tiger women by a 2-1score, winning the opener of the doubleheader in double overtime.
The two teams were scoreless until just ten minutes remained in the match, when IWC drew a penalty kick. Albert Michael (Fr.-St. Johns, Antigua) scored on the penalty kick for his second goal of the season and gave Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.
Iowa Wesleyan was poised for the win, but the Mustangs tied the game in the final minute when Rick Kievitz scored on a bicycle kick to send the match into overtime in stunning fashion. Morningside then scored the winner late in overtime, dropping the Tigers to 2-5-1 overall this season.
Troy Osborne (Jr.-Sydney, Australia) made nine saves in goal for IWC. Morningside posted a 15-11 advantage in shots and had 11 shots on goal to just four for the Tigers.
Wesleyan returns to Midwest Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday when it travels to Dubuque to face Clarke University at 5 p.m.
