MOUNT PLEASANT – Allegra Tennis (Sr.-Madison, Wis.) had a career-high 14 kills and Iowa Wesleyan College used a big advantage at the net to defeat Waldorf College in three sets Tuesday night at Ruble Arena.
The Tigers defeated the Warriors 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23for their first Midwest Collegiate Conference win of the season. IWC moved to 1-3 in conference play (5-16 overall) and moved ahead of Waldorf in the conference standings as the Warriors fell to 0-3 (6-17 overall).
Wesleyan had a strong night on the attack, with just 11 hitting errors with 41 kills in 122 attempts (.246 hitting percentage). The Tigers were led by Tennis, who was dominant with 14 kills and just one error in 18 attempts. Her .722 attack percentage was the best by an IWC player in more than five years, since Jenny Harris hit .800 with 13 kills and one error in 15 attempts in a match Sept. 2, 2005 against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University.
In gaining the sweep, Iowa Wesleyan was in control most of the night, but Waldorf hung in and even led late in the first and third sets. The Tigers controlled the second set from the start, moving out to a quick 7-1 lead as Katie Jammer (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and Megan McVey (Jr.-Fort Worth, Texas) served and the Warriors contributed with three quick attack errors.
Along with Tennis owning the net, B.J. Wagy (Sr.-Cedar Rapids, Iowa) also added 10 kills as well as five blocks. McVey also had nine kills and just one attack error in 29 attempts and added 14 digs. Kendra Zimmerman (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) led the Tigers in assists with 34 as well as digs with 18, including seven in the third set to keep rallies going as IWC came back from a three-point deficit midway through the set.
Jennifer McLarney, a native of nearby Fairfield, Iowa, led Waldorf with 11 kills. Kinzie Towry had 19 digs and Morgan Rushford had 31 assists.
Wesleyan will take the weekend off and next will face Ashford University in another conference match next Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.
