Viterbo wins overall title, Tigers finish eighth in Fun City Classic

BURLINGTON – Viterbo (Wis.) University took the lead after the first day and shot even better the second day, pulling away to win the annual Fun City Classic men’s golf tourney hosted by Iowa Wesleyan College at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The V-Hawks shot a team score of 305 on the first day and bettered that on Tuesday with a score of 297 for a winning total of 602 strokes. Viterbo outdistanced Wheaton (Ill.) College, which finished at 619, while Iowa Western Community College (630) edged Quincy (Ill.) University (633) and Truman State (Mo.) University (634) in a three-way battle for third.

Iowa Wesleyan finished eighth of the 10 teams on hand, compiling a two-day team score of 688. The Tigers scored 350 on the first day but improved 12 strokes on the second day for a team total of 688.

The Tigers were led by Emery McGraw (Sr.-Loveland, Colo.), who shot a team-best round of 79 on Tuesday and finished with a two-day score of 165 to tie for 29th individually. Ryan Grun (So.-Kansas City, Mo.) shot rounds of 87 and 81 to finish three strokes behind McGraw and tie for 35th place.

Zach Hale (So.-Indianola, Iowa) led IWC with a round of 85 on the first day and also finished with an 85 to tie for 38th. Kyle Emerson (Jr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) fired rounds of 92 and 93 for a total of 185 that was good for 50th individually, and Clint Phelps (So.-Quincy, Ill.) finished with a two-day total of 210 to place 57th.

Along with winning the team title, Viterbo also furnished the individual medalist as Mike Hesselman shot rounds of 70 and 69 to win honors by seven strokes over Steven Moore of Wheaton. Hesselman’s total of 139 was good for five-under par on the par-72, 7,301-yard Spirit Hollow course.

Wesleyan will next be at the Viterbo Ronnie Eastman Invitational at the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, Wis. Play begins Sunday and continues Monday.
