Tiger cross country teams get preview of MCC Championships with Ashford Open

CLINTON – Iowa Wesleyan College joined several other Midwest Collegiate Conference schools in getting a first look at the site of the upcoming MCC Championships Saturday at the Ashford University Open at the Ashford Sports Complex.

The Tigers joined Ashford, St. Ambrose University, Mount Mercy University, Clarke University and William Penn University as MCC schools competing in Saturday’s 5-kilometer women’s race and 8K men’s race. Mount Mercy claimed the women’s championship over closest competitor St. Ambrose, while SAU returned the favor over Mount Mercy to take the men’s title.

IWC sent four runners to compete in the women’s race. Breanna Derynck (Fr.-Clarence, Iowa) led the team and finished 40th individually with a time of 25:02. LaStacy Freeman (Fr.-St. Louis, Mo.) placed 45th with a time of 27:09, while Kellie Wolfe (Sr.-West Point, Iowa) was 49th in 28:35 and Rebecca Wilson (So.-Algonquin, Ill.) took 51st with a time of 30:38.

C.J. Earnest (So.-Wapello, Iowa) was the lone Tiger to compete in the men’s race. Earnest finished 48th individually with a time of 42:32.

Iowa Wesleyan next will compete in the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf.
