CEDAR RAPIDS – Mount Mercy University scored four goals in the first 16 minutes of play and the Iowa Wesleyan College women’s soccer team was unable to come back as it lost to the Mustangs 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
The Tigers struggled out of the gate and dropped to 1-12-1 overall on the season, 0-5 in MCC play. Mount Mercy improved to 2-2-1 in conference play, 4-8-1 overall.
The Mustangs scored their first goal five minutes into the game, and then got a hat trick from Kandice Kiernan in taking a 4-0 lead just 16 minutes into the match. Mount Mercy took that 4-0 into halftime, outshooting the Tigers 11-3 in the first 45 minutes.
IWC played the hosts even in the second half and even got a goal when Brittney Moss (Jr.-Genoa, Ill.) scored her first of the season to make it 4-1 in the 74th minute. Mount Mercy added a final goal four minutes later by Brooklyn Schrader to cap the scoring.
Cara Arnold (Jr.-Davis Junction, Ill.) made six saves in goal for the Tigers. Mount Mercy outshot Wesleyan 24-6 in the match, including a 10-5 lead in shots on goal.
IWC closes out its season with its final three regular season matches at home at East Lake Park. The Tigers will host Grand View University on Wednesday in an MCC match scheduled for 1 p.m.
