Wesleyan women’s golf team wraps up fall season with pair of tourneys

MOUNT PLEASANT – The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s golf team wrapped up its 2010 fall season with separate one-day tournaments held Sunday and Monday.

The Tigers competed in the Ashford University Classic Sunday afternoon at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, and then took part in the Mount Mercy University Donald Ross Collegiate Invitational on Monday at the Cedar Rapids Country Club. IWC finished 10th of 11 teams at the Ashford Classic and then placed seventh of nine teams at Mount Mercy, the team’s final meet of the fall season.

Wesleyan finished with a team score of 385 on Sunday, one stroke behind the Ashford Gold team for ninth. Ashford’s lead team won the tourney with a score of 334, edging out Viterbo (Wis.) University’s 340 for the team title.

IWC was led on Sunday by Melissa Petersen (Sr.-Wilton, Iowa), who finished tied for 30th individually with a score of 93. Alyssa McClain (Jr.-Belleville, Ill.) finished one stroke behind Petersen with a round of 94, which tied for 37th. Gabby Combs (Sr.-Macomb, Ill.) tied for 42nd place with a score of 98.

Kayla Bishop (Jr.-Monmouth, Ill.) tied for 48th with a round of 100, while Stevie Schrier (Jr.-Columbus Junction, Iowa) placed 56th with a score of 116. Michelle Lox (Jr.-Danville, Iowa) competed as an individual and tied for 54th with a round of 107.

The Tigers had a tougher time on Monday, finishing with a team score of 423. Viterbo got the upper hand on Ashford this time, finishing with a score of 351 to the Saints’ 355, with St. Ambrose University close behind in third with a score of 357.

Wesleyan was led individually by Bishop, who posted a 15th place finish with a round of 93. Other Tigers struggled, though, as Comb shot a 102, Petersen fired a 110, McClain carded a 118 and Schrier scored 122. Lox competed as an individual again and posted the team’s third-best score with a round of 104.
