MOUNT PLEASANT – Upper Iowa University scored twice in the first ten minutes and stayed in control the rest of the way as it defeated Iowa Wesleyan College 5-0 in a men’s soccer match Wednesday afternoon at East Lake Park.
The visiting Peacocks owned play almost from the start and dominated the non-conference match, sending the Tigers to their eighth straight defeat. IWC fell to 2-12-1 overall, while Upper Iowa, a member of NCAA Division II, improved to 8-6-2.
Upper Iowa scored three times in the first half, starting with a goal by Alan Martinez just 3:48 into the match. Derek Oelmann then scored his first of two goals on the day, coming less than six minutes after the Peacocks’ opening goal.
Frank Atchison scored in the 37th minute to make it 3-0 before halftime. The Peacocks then scored again quickly after halftime after Tony Varnava converted on a rebound to make it 4-0. Oelmann added his second goal in the 57th minute for the final score of the match.
UIU outshot the Tigers 23-8 in the match and posted a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Jordan Bell made four saves for the shutout for Upper Iowa, while Troy Osborne (Jr.-Sydney, Australia) had seven saves for the Tigers.
Pierre Bruggeman (So.-Kortenberg, Belgium) led Wesleyan offensively with three shots taken, two on goal. Bruggeman and Walton Ponce (So.-Muscatine, Iowa) had the best chances to score for the Tigers, as both missed shots just in front of the Upper Iowa goal in the final 30 minutes.
The Iowa Wesleyan soccer teams will wrap up their seasons Saturday in Midwest Collegiate Conference matches at home against Viterbo (Wis.) University. The women’s match will begin at 1 p.m., with the men’s match to follow at approximately 3 p.m. Senior Day activities for both the men’s and women’s teams will take place in between games prior to the start of the men’s match.
