Thirty-eight Iowa Wesleyan College students and community residents set aside their Saturday plans and picked up rakes and work gloves while taking part in Saturday’s National Make-A-Difference Day. Throughout the Mt. Pleasant and Salem communities, 20 homes got hands-on help with yard work. Teams of students worked together to rake and bag leaves, pull weeds, and clean out eaves in preparation for winter weather.
Thelma Simmons, of Mt. Pleasant said, “Outside of family members, I have never been privileged to have someone come and do such a beautiful job, out of the goodness of their heart… Students certainly made a difference here!”
Student event organizer Pam Burns, a senior from Iowa City, noted that it was amazing to see the turnout of more than 30 students. “They all worked so hard. It was awesome to see how beneficial their service was to the recipients.”
Iowa Wesleyan College plans to continue their long tradition of service through this academic year by holding other events to benefit local, regional, and international communities.
