Photojournalist and fine arts photographer Michael Adams of Des Moines is the featured artist in the Iowa Wesleyan College Art Gallery. Adams will speak about his work on Friday, November 12 at noon. The program is open to the public.
Twenty-three of his photos are currently on display in the IWC Gallery, located at the main entrance to the P.E.O. Administration Building.
Adams has specialized in environmental portraits and editorial photojournalism for magazines and newspapers. His photojournalism and fine arts work have been exhibited throughout the Midwest, including one-person shows at Simpson College, Augsberg College, Grandview University, Plymouth Congregational Church and Zanzibar’s in Des Moines.
He taught photography for several years as a member of the Simpson College art department and is a member of the Fine Print Group, a salon of central Iowa photographers specializing in fine arts photography.
His photography has been published in the Des Moines Register’s Picture Magazine, the Iowan Magazine, Arts and Antiques, Credit Union magazine and Meredith Corporation magazines. Asked by the Iowa Sister States organization to serve as the Iowa representative in a photographer’s exchange, Adams traveled to Stavropol, Russia, in 1997 and the resulting exhibit of black and white film photography, titled “A Sister’s Eye: The Iowa-Stavropol Project,” toured Iowa and Russia. Additionally he has photographed and exhibited work taken in Nicaragua, Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, France and Northern Ireland. His next body of work will feature his digital and film photography taken in Los Angeles.
Adams is the vice president of marketing and public relations at Greater Iowa Credit Union. Prior to that, he was director of public relations and marketing at Simpson College in Indianola for 18 years. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa and spent four years in the U.S. Air Force stationed in the United Kingdom.
The Iowa Wesleyan Art Gallery hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
