Brunson, Madison pace Tigers at Cornell Invite

MOUNT VERNON – Kelvin Brunson (So.-Dooly County, Ga.) posted a pair of marks among the all-time best in Iowa Wesleyan College indoor track and field history on Saturday at the Cornell College Hilltop Invitational.

Brunson posted a qualifying time of 6.61 seconds in the 55-meter dash, his personal best time and the third-best ever in IWC history. He also finished the 200 in 23.55, tying for the fourth-best time ever for a Tiger in that event.

Both times came for Brunson in just his third meet competing for IWC. The sophomore’s qualifying time in the 55 dash qualified him for the finals in that event, where he finished sixth with a time of 6.67. His time in the 200 was good for 11th individually among more than 100 entrants in the 200 at the meet which featured athletes competing from 19 different schools.

Other top performers for the Wesleyan men included Lonzell Maddock (Sr.-Seattle, Wash.), whose time of 8.61 in the 55 hurdles was a season best. Tim Chavez (So.-Champaign, Ill.) also had his best mark of the season in the shot put, throwing 40-9 ½ (12.43m) to place fourth in the fourth flight division at the meet.

A limited number of IWC women competing were led by Wendy Madison (Sr.-Yucca Valley, Calif.), who qualified for the finals in both the long jump and triple jump. Madison posted the top qualifying mark in the long jump before coming in second in the finals with a top mark of 16-7 (5.05m). She also placed fourth in the triple jump with a best of 32-4 ¾ (9.87m).

No team scores were kept at the meet.

IWC’s next meet is back at the site of the team’s opening meet this season, with the team again going to Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., this time for the Knox Invitational. Events on Saturday will start at 10 a.m.
