Track teams start off well at Knox Pentangular

GALESBURG, ILL. – Iowa Wesleyan College opened its indoor track and field season with a number of solid performances Saturday afternoon at the Knox College Pentangular meet.

    The Tigers posted five top-three finishes and were competitive throughout the day in their first competition of the year. Team scores were not kept, but IWC turned in a total of 12 top-five performances in the meet that included the Tigers, Knox, Cornell College, Monmouth (Ill.) College and St. Ambrose University.

    Wendy Madison (Sr.-Yucca Valley, Calif.) opened her senior season with a win in the long jump, jumping 5.01 meters (16 feet, 5 ¼ inches). Madison also placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 10.13 m (33-3).

    Corrie Wagner (Sr.-Iowa City, Iowa) added a fourth place finish for the women in the shot put with a personal best of 11.97 m (39-3 ¼). Kate Krzystofiak (So.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) was also fourth in the 400 (1:12.35) while Serina Reyna (Fr.-Selma, Calif.) claimed fifth place in the 55 hurdle finals (9.97).

    The IWC men were led by the 4 x 200 relay team of Jason Amy (Jr.-Lake Elsinore, Calif.), Shawn Monos (Fr.-Warner Robins, Ga.), Kelvin Brunson (So.-Dooly County, Ga.) and Andrew Davis (Fr.-Macedonia, Ohio). The foursome finished second in the event in 1:34.94, edged out by less than a half second by the relay from Monmouth.

    Brunson and Amy also performed well in the 55 meter dash. Brunson tied for the top preliminary time before finishing third in the finals in 6.74 seconds, while Amy finished fifth in 6.82. Lonzell Maddock (Sr.-Seattle, Wash.) also added a third-place finish in the 55 hurdles (8.74).

    Wesleyan also had the fifth through ninth-place finishers in the 200 dash, led by Davis in fifth with a time of 24.17. Davis also tied for fourth in the high jump with a top mark of 1.77 m (5-9 ¾). Richard Dawson (Fr.-Normal, Ill.) also added a fifth-place in the triple jump with a best of 11.51 m (37-9 ¼).

    The men’s and women’s teams will now have two weeks before their next meet, the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Open in Bloomington, Ill. on Jan. 31.
