FINDLAY, OHIO – Four players from the Iowa Wesleyan College football team have been named to the Mid-States Football Association All-Academic Team for the 2008 football season, as announced yesterday by the league.
Receiving All-Academic honors from the MSFA were quarterback Bryan Abihider (Sr.-Hemet, Calif.), linebacker Kyle DeRossett (Sr.-Dupo, Ill.), defensive back/punter Tyler McGuire (Sr.-Mount Pleasant, Iowa) and offensive lineman Clint Hunold (Sr.-Donnellson, Iowa). This is the third straight season Wesleyan has had four players receive league academic honors.
DeRossett and Hunold both made the league All-Academic Team for the second straight year. DeRossett carries a 3.40 grade point average while majoring in Life Science. Hunold has a 3.25 GPA and is majoring in Mathematics and Criminal Justice at IWC.
Abihider and McGuire both received academic honors from the MSFA for the first time. Abihider has a 3.97 GPA and is majoring in Physical Education. McGuire, who in addition to playing defensive back and punting also kicked for the Tigers, carries a 3.28 GPA and is majoring in History.
Players selected to the MSFA All-Academic Team must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be a junior or senior in eligibility, and have made a significant contribution to their football team. A total of 104 players from the 16-team league made the academic team this year.
The Tigers finished 3-8 in the 2008 season, 1-7 in the MSFA Midwest League. IWC will open its 2009 season on Aug. 29 against Trinity International (Ill.) University, hosting the Trojans in a 6 p.m. home game at Evans Field in the Mapleleaf Community Complex.
