MOUNT PLEASANT – A trio of former Iowa Wesleyan College baseball players are showing well this summer in independent minor league play.
Former Tigers Andre Alvarado, Andrew Barbaro and Randy Rosa were all members of the 2007 IWC team that advanced to the NAIA Region VII Tournament. All are playing in independent leagues across the country.
Alvarado is playing for the Reno (Nev.) Silver Sox of the Golden Baseball League, which features eight teams in the West and covers an area from Arizona to Alberta, Canada. The former IWC shortstop has played in all 21 of the Silver Sox game and is batting .314. He is tied for the team lead with 21 runs scored, tied for second on the team with 20 RBIs and is tied for third on the squad with three home runs.
Barbaro is a member of the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Canaries of the 10-team American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. A former utility player for the Tigers, he has played in 10 of the Canaries’ 39 games and has a .394 batting average with 13 hits, three doubles and two RBIs.
Rosa plays for the River City Rascals, located in O’Fallon, Mo., and members of the Frontier League, made up of teams from the Midwest and Ohio Valley. A catcher on the 2007 team, he is a designated hitter for the Rascals and is hitting .250 in 19 games. He has five doubles, one home run and six RBIs and is second on the team with a .450 slugging percentage.
The 2007 IWC baseball team finished with a 32-19 mark under Head Coach Brett Monaghan, the third-most wins in school history. The team won its first-ever Midwest Classic (now Midwest Collegiate) Conference tourney championship and made the second trip in a current three-year streak of visits to NAIA regional play.
